Latvia took the lead against the much-fancied Czech team on the stroke of half-time. In the second period the Czechs were determined to get back into the game while the Latvians packed their defence to protect their lead. The Czech Republic eventually broke through, Baroš leveling the scores after 73 minutes and then, as the Latvians tired, Heinz scored the winner with five minutes left.

Germany needed to win and were on target after Ballack put them ahead after 21 minutes. The Czechs, already through and fielding an under strength side, came back with goals from Heinz (30 mins) and Baroš (77 mins) to put Germany out of the competition.
