The brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo propelled Portugal into the final. He put his team ahead in the first half but Switzerland equalised in the 57th minute after a bizarre VAR incident. Referee Felix Brych initially signalled for a penalty against the Swiss but he was summoned to the pitch-side monitor after which he awarded a penalty at the other end which Rodriguez converted. Understandably unsettled, Portugal struggled to find their rythm but in the closing minutes Ronaldo scored twice to settle matters.

England led at half-time from a penalty (Rashford 32') and looked on course for a win but in the second half the Dutch side had them pinned in their own half and de Ligt equalised in the 73rd minute. England responded positively and with six minutes to go Lingard had the ball in the Dutch net but the VAR officials had noted he was marginally offside. in extra time two appalling defensive blunders allowed the Netherlands to score twice. It was an ignominious defeat for Gareth Southgate's team.
