NIFL Premiership 2013 - 2014

ifa premiership logo 2012-13The Northern Ireland Football League took over the Premiership from the Irish Football Association (IFA) in the summer, bringing the top three tiers under one umbrella. It is the top-level competition in Northern Ireland made up of semi-professional clubs, currently ranked 47th (out of 53) in Europe by UEFA.

The league winners qualify for the Champions' League while the teams finishing second and third go into the Europa League. A third Europa League place goes to the winner of the Irish Cup.

For the first time in their long history, Lisburn Distillery were relegated to the second tier and their place is taken by Ards who return to the top flight after an absence of seven years. Donegal Celtic finished 11th and were beaten on away goals by Warrenpoint Town who make their debutin the Premiership.

ards fc crestFormed in 1900 in Newtonards, Ards have been homeless since 1998 when they were forced to sell Castlereagh Park to reduce their debts. Plans to build a new home have so far come to naught and they currently share Clandeboye Park with Bangor FC. They are wearing the same strips as last season when they won Championship 1.

cliftonville fc crestFounder members of the Irish Football Association and the Irish Football League, Cliftonville won the Premiership title last season with eight points to spare as well as the League Cup. They narrowly missing out on the treble, beaten 3-1 in the Irish Cup final in extra time by Glentoran. The bright green away strip is unchanged and the new home kit is in the latest version of the Puma King template with a bit of green trim in the collar detail.

They have won the championship no fewer than 23 times and last season won the Irish Cup for the 21st time. Fans voted to choose the new home strip from a shortlist of five just in time for it to be worn in the Europa League match with KR Reykjavík in July. The team was strengthened with several Newry City players after that club was wound up in September 2012 and Warrenpoint finished as runners-up, winning the promotion play-off on away goals.
